Cambridge Weight Plan South Africa

How it Started

Cambridge Weight Plan can trace its roots back to the 1950s and 60s, when British biochemist Dr Alan Howard developed an interest in weight loss and obesity. During the 1970s, Dr Howard worked with Dr Ian McLean-Baird to develop what they regarded as the “perfect diet” – a safe formula food with excellent weight loss properties. It needed to contain the right levels of protein to protect lean tissue, carbohydrate to promote a mild ketosis and eliminate hunger, and nutrients to maintain good health.

The effectiveness and safety of their formula was tested in hospitals and with outpatients, and demonstrated remarkable weight loss, patient acceptability and patient safety. It was then used in obesity clinics in London and Cambridge and its long-term safety was assessed and confirmed by further independent research in the UK, the USA and Europe. The first commercial version launched in the UK as The Cambridge Diet in 1984.

It went on to become a global and award-winning programme. Today Cambridge Weight Plan meals are still produced in the UK and distributed worldwide through an extensive international network of consultants.
